A man who died trying to be a Good Samaritan and save four children struggling in a lake, has been posthumously honored with the “Miami-Dade County Citizen of the Year” by the Hispanic Officer’s Association.

On Sunday March 26, Michael Sanchez, 33, was visiting a friend in Homestead when he heard children on a small sinking boat screaming for help in the middle of a lake.

Sanchez, without regard for his own safety, jumped into the lake to try and save the kids. While in the water, however, Sanchez suffered leg cramps and struggled from exhaustion. He drowned before he was able to help the children.

They were rescued, unhurt, by others.
